Hi! I’m William “Lee” Dubois (called either Wil or Lee, depending what part of the internet you’re on). I’m a diabetes columnist and the author of four books about diabetes that have collectively won 16 national and international book awards. (Hey, if you can’t brag about yourself on your own blog, where can you??) I have the great good fortune to pen the edgy Dear Abby-style advice column every Saturday at Diabetes Mine; write the Diabetes Simplified column for dLife; and am one of the ShareCare diabetes experts. My work also appears in Diabetic Living and Diabetes Self-Management magazines. In addition to writing, I’ve spent the last half-dozen years running the diabetes education program for a rural non-profit clinic in the mountains of New Mexico. Don’t worry, I’ll get some rest after the cure. LifeAfterDx is my personal home base, where I get to say what and how I feel about diabetes and… you know… life, free from the red pens of editors (all of whom I adore, of course!).

I made my Mom cry…

No, it wasn’t something that I said. It wasn’t something that I did. It was something that I wrote.

My assignment was type 2 in kids. You know, for back to school. The problem is the subject is grimmer than you can imagine. When kids get type 2 the disease is faster, more aggressive, and harder to treat than it is in adults. And the not-so-long-term outcomes will leave you reaching for Kleenex, or stiff drink. Or both.

In fact, the last line of the article sent me into a day-long depression. And I’m the one who wrote it.

Go figure.

If Pharma companies had musical soundtracks…

…Abbott Diabetes Care would have to use Cher’s 1971 hit Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.

Mission Possible

The email read, “Good morning, Mr. Dubois, your mission... should you choose to accept it... is to simplify healthcare reform. This email will self-destruct in five seconds...”

What? You never watched Mission Impossible in the old days?

Anyway, how could I turn down a challenge like that?!

So here’s the deal. I don’t give a rat’s ass what your politics are. And I’m not going to talk about mine today. But the new healthcare law affects all of us. What do you really know about it? Come on, dive into the deep water with me, below the sound bites and political posturing, and learn what the new law of the land is really all about.
